Louis Wain's cats

This image is probably one of the latest pictures of a cat by Louis Wain (1860-1939). Louis William Wain was born on May 8, 1860 in London, England. His first drawings of cats were dedicated to his wife, suffering breast cancer. Louis would sit by her bed and drew a pictures of their cat Peter to cheer her, up to her last days (1883). His drawings were black and white at first, but after his wife's death Louis Wain continued to draw cats in colours. His cat's pictures were alive, lively, colourful. Soon Louis Wain became famous in Britain and US.

During and after WWI people didn't buy Wain's pictures as they did before. (Who would buy anything at that time?) He fell into depression and poverty. At age 57 (in 1917) Wain was put in mental hospital with schizophrenia. In 1924 he was pronounced insane for believing that his mind was manipulated. Louis claimed that he could see and feel electromagnetic currents surrounding not only cats but any living being. His paintings became very disturbing and startling. One of Louis Wain's collections of his work is in the "Victoria & Albert Museum" in London, England.
